Hike Gone Wrong

Hike Gone Wrong

Well its was my turn to write a post, so here it goes. Saturday, June 6th started out better than expected. The weatherman had been predicting rain and snow for the weekend, somehow they got it wrong. It was over cast and cool out, but not too bad. So, I figured it was a good  excuse to go for a short hike and maybe get some fishing in.
.
So Lyssa and I got ready, loaded up the kids, and headed to Island Park. Saw some pretty meadows  with flowers and other scenery along the way. So I'm feeling good, and get this idea, let's go somewhere new. We head over to an area that has a old abandoned logging road. I look at the map and tell the family, all we got to do is follow this road about a mile, and that should get us fairly close to a stream, seems easy enough. Upon arrival I should have known it was a bad idea when we parked at the gate. The logging road is on the map, were standing where the road should be, but the road isn't really visible.  Not going to let that deter us from fishing, we push on. Wasn't too long and the road has a tank trap to prevent automobiles from using it. No worries, we'll just walk around it, only problem was after 6 or 7 of those tank traps, family starts questioning why we are doing this. I convince them it will be okay, there are fish to catch, so we push on. After a couple more of those tank traps, a heavily forested trail you can barely make out,I start thinking maybe this is a bad idea. Did I mention the mosquitoes, kids were not enjoying that either, After donating a few pints of blood to mosquitoes, scrapes on all the brush and trees,  and tank traps we decided fish aren't worth it. So we head back to the truck

The weather was still okay, and not to let a good day go to waste, I suggest going to Targhee Creek. Everybody is up for it. So, off we go to Targhee Creek. At the trail head there is a warning about bears. Nothing haven't seen before, except these bears appear to prefer people who ride bicycles. Gives a new meaning to meals-on-wheels.
This trail was much better, trail is maintained, gentle grade, nice open meadows, and follows the creek. We made it a couple miles up the trail.

We take a break and Lyssa say's "those clouds look dark maybe we should head back" At first I' m thinking it will be okay, but Lyssa is usually right about this kind of stuff. So I decide to check the weather app on my phone. A big nasty storm was coming and we didn't have much time. So we had to hustle back.

We made good time getting out of there, as the trail is mostly good condition. We got rained on a little, but not too bad.  Once we got to the truck ,that's when all hell let loose- high winds, lightning, and severe downpour. Glad I listened to Lyssa!  Maybe Saturday didn't turn out quite like we had hoped, but it was still a fun adventure. Hopefully we can try Targhee Trail again another day. So thats it for now, until next time, happy hiking.
